I first came into contact with Terence McKenna some time around 1990. A friend had returned from San Francisco and brought home the usual stack of underground books, movies, records, information & gossip. All of it was processed and discussed over the course of a few stoned weekends, and our local frame of reference was updated with a sliver of Bay Area buzz.

Among the items up for scrutiny was a commercial video featuring Terence McKenna giving a lecture, augmented by psychedelic graphics. I already knew McKenna’s name from somewhere, but this was my first encounter with his trademark monologues, and combined with the inventive acid visuals, the video had us nailed to our stoner sofa for the full duration.

Almost 20 years later, I still remember this so clearly that I had no problem identifying the old VHS release via Youtube clips (it turned out to be The Petaluma Experiment).

“Born in Madison, Wisconsin, 1951. Now lives in Reno, Nevada. An associate professor of art at the University of Nevada at Reno, Goin spent 1991–92 as artist-in-residence at the Center for Documentary Studies, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. Goin’s recent publications include Tracing the Line: A Photographic Survey of the Mexican-American Border (1987), Nuclear Landscapes (1991), and Stopping Time: A Rephotographic Survey of Lake Tahoe (1992). His work was included in “Polemical Landscapes,” California Museum of Photography, University of California, Riverside. An exhibition of his called “Peter Goin: The Land as Witness,” was shown at the Baltimore Museum of Art (1991).” - Merry A. Foresta, Stephen Jay Gould, and Karal Ann Marling. Human beings have changed the world we live in far from what is would naturally be without human interaction. These things include waterways, cut down forests, killed entire populations of animals, and many other things that not only affect small vicinities, but also entire ecosystems.” (Source)
